Since the opening of the school, we have funded the free school lunch provision, with some support from Reverend Duncan Macbean.
The children have been consuming approximately 10 bags of rice (50kg each in size) per term. Due to increasing prices in Sierra Leone, this was a significant expense for us to cover.
However, earlier this year, we decided to try something new and make the most of the fertile land surrounding Mabomboh. So, we planted rice over an area of 8 acres.
During our recent trip to Sierra Leone, this rice was harvested. The adults in the community were a great support, completing all the work as their own contribution to their children’s education.
The harvest was a huge success, with a yield of 30 bags of rice (50kg each in size)! This was an amazing result for us as it means we will not have to buy rice to feed the children for the rest of the academic year and, hopefully, the beginning of the next school year. The children will now enjoy organic rice grown in their local area!
To all our farmers or avid gardeners, we are calling for donations of shovels, gloves, wellies, raincoats… even a combine harvester or tractor! These will assist us as we embark on future school-related farming projects, such as a school garden.
Please get in touch so we can continue to provide the children of Mabomboh with nutritious, free school meals.
